Kiomatia Blueberry Farm is a small family owned operation maintained by Judy and Kenneth Short. Judy and Ken are a retired couple in their mid 60’s. The blueberry bushes at the farm are 6 to 7 years old and will reach full maturity at about 8 years of age.
The first year of “pick your own operations” was in 2006. The hope is to appeal to our original local customer base as well as to to customers from more distant locations. In the future, new facilities are planned which will provide additional customer comfort amenities.
Kiomatia Blueberry Farm has approximately 1200 blueberry plants. About 1000 bushes are of the “northern highbush variety” which produce ripe berries from about June 1 through late June. These berries are large, thin skinned, and few, if any, small seeds. They tend to have a slight tartness to sweetness depending on degree of ripeness. The other variety of blueberry is “rabbit eye” which ripens from late June through mid July. These berries are not quite as large as the northern highbush berries. However, they have a superior flavor and have a few more small seeds. The skins tend to be just a bit thicker.
